Planning a training session? Know your audience!

Updated: Oct 29, 2021

Ever been to a training session, arrived with enthusiasm, and quickly lost interest?

As a trainer it is vital that you know your audience and plan your training content accordingly. Too hard and your audience become overwhelmed. Too easy and they will soon be looking out the window thinking about what to cook for dinner.

Attention spans are reducing rapidly...

Research suggests that the average adult attention span is now only 5 minutes, that’s down from 12 minutes a decade ago.

So it’s imperative that you jump in at the right level.

Before you plan any content ask yourself the following:

  • Who are you creating this training for?

  • Do they already have some existing knowledge?

  • What are they expecting to learn?

  • What will they find most helpful or interesting?

  • Will they understand any jargon or technical terms that you plan to use? And is there any terminology you want them to adopt going forward?

  • Where can they go for further help on this subject in future?

Understanding your audience can make a huge difference to the engagement you will experience. Take some time to answer these questions and then design your content around it. If your training sits at the right level and delivers the information your audience requires, they’ll make the effort to receive it.
